Hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of WWW Wednesday, a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words, which means I’ll be answering these questions:
- What did you read last?
- What are you currently reading?
- What will you read next?

It’s the final Wednesday in April and since last week I’ve read 3 books—all of which were smutty dark cowboy romance from the Trails of Sin series by Pam Godwin. I didn’t know this sub-genre was a thing and, for the life of me, I can’t recall how it came on my radar and landed in my Kindle, but I assume it’s cos the first book was free… 🤭
Knotted was leaps and bounds outside of my comfort zone but Buckled and Booted brought it back down to a step outside of it. I can see why this author is known for her dark romance because she does not hold back on details and it’s grim. If dark romance is your jam (like, really your jam) then I would feel comfortable recommending this series to check out; however, if you want to dip your toes in out of curiosity, this could be the book that sends you running away from it! It’s gritty, dark, and twisted and yet, I enjoyed Godwin’s writing and devoured all three books over the weekend. 👀 I don’t think I’ll be rating them though because I don’t even know how to, lol.

- A Closed and Common Orbit ⇢ 80% ⇢ Buddy reading with Leslie. I have flown through this book! This morning I was at 40% and I’m now near the end. I think this is also a testament to the readability of Chambers’ writing—it’s so readable! I’m feeling more invested in Pepper’s parts of the story but I’m still enjoying Sidra’s POV too.
- Project Hail Mary ⇢ 67% ⇢ I am getting through this so slowly. Aside from all the science speak slowing me down, I can’t tell you why I’m barely making progress when I read bits every night! Every time I pick it up I feel like I barely make a dent and I’m starting to get a bit frustrated because I’m so very read to be done with this, lol. I don’t know what’s wrong with me! 😂
- Saint Catherine ⇢ 41% ⇢ I am so incredibly behind on my tour read for tomorrow… But this graphic novel will get read by then. So far, I’m enjoying it a lot and find the story fascinating and relatable in ways, plus the artwork is great!
- How Zelda Married Death ⇢ 12% ⇢ Continuing this did not happen… I still want to continue but I’m getting the feeling maybe it’s not my jam? Let’s see if it becomes a DNF (for now?)!

It’ll be tour reads and wherever the mood takes me!

What are you currently reading? I hope you’re enjoying whatever book you’ve picked up, friends!

I’m currently reading Immortal in Death, book 3 of the In Death books by JD Robb. It’s over 20 years since I last read these early ones so could remember very little
I’ve finished:-Darik’s Quest by Veronica Scott.
The Marriage Claim by Evie Mitchell
Sins of Leo by Eve Langlais. Presumed Guilty by Tess Gerritson.
Love, Lies, and Whiskey by Melissa Foster.
Missing in Death by JD Robb.
Naked in Death by JD Robb.
Glory in Death by JD Robb.
Not sure what next. Whether to continue with the In Death books. Or something else. Decisions decisions Gill

I’ve always been very curious about the In Death books but I always get intimidated by how many there are. I hope you’re enjoying them on re-read though! Melissa Foster is a romance author that I think I’ve heard of before a well but I’m not sure if I’ve read any of her books (my memory is terrible, lol)! I hope you enjoy whatever you decide to pick up next 🙂

Good Luck with getting through Project Hail Mary. I found the Sciency side of it slowed things down a bit for me too. I didn’t enjoy it as much as The Martian. I’ve got One Dark Window on my TBR for next month too.

Ooh, is The Martian less science-y? I’m kind of bummed by how much the science stuff is hindering my progress, haha. I guess this book is just too smart for me and I know for sure now the type of sci-fi that I enjoy. It’s definitely less of the science-y type! 🤭 I hope you enjoy One Dark Window whenever you get to it this month! Happy reading 🙂

It felt less science heavy to me or maybe it was just more accessible. I’m definitely looking forward to reading One Dark Window 😀

I finished PHM this weekend after picking the audiobook back up and I think my mistake was that I didn’t continue with the audiobook. It made the story much more enjoyable and I ended up finishing in 1-2 days after starting it again, lol. I’m glad to hear that the Martian was at least more accessible!

I’m glad it was enjoyable and well done for finishing it so quickly in the end

Dark cowboy romance? Who would have thought lol – and the way you describe it makes me curious but I think like you I might be running from it. 😅 Enjoy your books!

Yep, who would’ve thought! I had no idea this was a thing but now I do 😂 It was… Interesting. Definitely not something that I will probably return to but it was nice to take a step outside the comfort box for a bit!

I read Blades of Furry recently! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Ooh, YAY! I’m so excited to hear that you enjoyed it. It looks very cute. I can’t wait to give it a go 🙂

Dark romance is not my thing ( you know I like the cute and fluffy), but it’s great that these were successful for you.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s a sub-genre that I will continue to delve into very deeply but this was interesting and I didn’t have an awful time so that’s something, lol!

Ohh, Trails of Sin sounds really dark and tackles heavy topics, but I am intrigued now that I checked it out… I’m sorry to hear this about Project Hail Mary. Are you reading it or listening to the audiobook? I find the audio was better for me, and so enjoyable. Happy reading 🙂

Oh… I don’t know if Trails of Sin will be your jam. It’s very dark and uncomfortable at times (okay, often), especially the first book. I was listening to the audio while following along with my digital copy but I’ve ended up reading more without the audio. I did enjoy it but I think it’s more that this book is too smart for me and I’m kind of skimming over the science and physics bits that I don’t understand! 😂 I don’t hate it though, I’m just keen to see it done now, lol.

Aw I’m sorry you feel stuck on PROJECT HAIL MARY! I hate when I feel like that about a book. Usually that happens to me if I start feeling like the audiobook is too long, lol, so I try to stick to 9 hours or less.

I should probably continue with the audiobook for this but I think it really is the science stuff that’s slowing me down a lot. I’m really enjoying the non-science-y parts of the book but otherwise, this book is way too smart for me, haha! 😂 Let’s see if I can get it done by the weekend.

Instagram recently made me add a cowboy romance to my TBR but I think I’ll leave off on trying the one you’ve shared as your comments have made me nervous 😂 maybe if the other romances I’ve been adding lately go well I’ll give it a try.
Out of curiosity is Project Hail Mary a print or ebook? Because if it’s the latter it could be a font size thing within the print version or the book looking smaller as an ebook than it truly is. I’ve had books I’ve loved but thought ‘wow I seem to be getting through this slowly considering how much I’m enjoying it’ then seen them in store and thought ‘okay you were reading that pretty fast for the size 😂’
I’m glad you’re continuing to love the Becky Chambers series so much. I hope you enjoyed the rest of the graphic novel. And I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling with the last one.
Ooh I can’t wait to read One Dark Window 😍 and I adore the cover of Masquerade. I hope the tour reads go well. I’ve never tried one.
I’m between books atm as I finished an arc of The Bewitching and wanted to try and do some catch up with a few things today. I’m planning to start A Letter From The Lonesome Shore either tonight or tomorrow though (depending how long catch up takes) and hope to finish it this weekend as I didn’t realise how close it’s release date was. To be fair I only got accepted for it about two days ago. I loved book one too so I’m really looking forward to diving into it.

You are probably finished with our buddy read now. I’m so sorry, I’m only at 54%! I’m going to try and get a lot finished today. Finn has a canine and molar coming in at the same time. He has been T O U G H this week!! I am going to read my first cowboy romance this month (May) by Lyla Sage! One Dark Window was so good! I still need to read the second book.. if you want to jump into that one after you finish book 1, I’ll do it with you! ❤

Haha, you ended up finishing it before I did! I stopped because I knew the last bits were going to get me more emotional and I didn’t want to be crying on public transport or at the gym 🤭 I’m glad we finished it though and I’m excited to continue on with the series! It was a great second book. I’m really glad that we’re enjoying this series so much. I think our sci-fi buddy reads are always so fun! And ooh, I’ve heard so much about the Lyla Sage series. It’s so well loved and I admit I’m curious about it too. Have you not read Elsie Silver? I don’t know why I thought you did 🤔 And Ooh, yes, I’ll update you on my progress with One Dark Window! Would be keen to do a buddy read for the second one whenever I get the first read, lol.

Oooh can’t wait to read your thoughts on One Dark Window and Masquerade, I loved both of them! And I’m glad to hear you’re still enjoying the Wayfinder series 🙂

I haven’t continued with either One Dark Window or Masquerade yet but I think the latter is going to be my new gym read on audio! Unless I end up continuing this non-fiction book that I’m reading, lol. I remember seeing your thoughts on Masquerade but did you enjoy One Dark Window?

Yes! I loved it, it’s so gothic and dark and I loved the romance. Fingers crossed you get round to picking it up again soon 😊

So nice you did that impromptu marathon and discovered a new genre. I have heard great things about Project Hail Mary but I also think I would not enjoy it because I wouldn’t be able to understand it. I am curious about your opinion once you’re done.

PHM is definitely too heavy on the science for my personal tastes but I ended up really enjoying it. I think my mistake was not continuing on with the audiobook for a good chunk of the book because when I started it up with the audio again, it only took me like 1-2 days to finish it! I’m glad that I read it but I do hope that any other book I check out by this author won’t be as science heavy, haha.
