We’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is Books to Read During a Storm (these can be cozy/comfy reads, books with storms in them, atmospheric reads for dark and stormy nights, light reads to combat the heavy weather, etc.) (Submitted by Astilbe.)
I don’t know about you but I’m always looking for a good atmospheric or cosy/comforting read that I can cuddle up with when it’s gloomy, rainy, or stormy outside. What I read depends on my mood at any moment, so I’ve decided to split my list into two and spotlight both cosy/light and dark/atmospheric books. Let’s go!

*book covers are linked to my review if I have written one
Cosy/Light Reads

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea
Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute
A Rival Most Vial
That Time I Got Drunk and Saved A Demon
Before the Coffee Gets Cold
Moody/Atmospheric Reads

Truly Devious
Starling House
Force of Nature
The Silence of Bones
Immortal Dark

Do you prefer cosy/light reads when it’s stormy out or do you go for something that’s more atmospheric to match what’s going on outside?

Immortal Dark really caught my eye here!

I still need to read Before the Coffee Gets Cold! Probably a library check out for me. I don’t know that I prefer one type of book over the other when it’s storming out. As long as I’m enjoying my current read that’s good enough for me! 🙂

I hope you enjoy Before the Coffee Gets Cold. It’s definitely one of those slower “quieter” reads but the themes just hit me and made me weepy, lol.

Oooh love your picks for this weeks prompt, Dini! I’ve heard good things about Before the Coffee Gets Cold, so I’ll definitely have to add that one to my TBR.

It was a quick and easy read. Very touching and made me just a bit emotional lol 🫣

Truly Devious is a great one to include! I read that a couple years ago and did enjoy it. Now I just need to read the rest in the series. 🙂

I need to finish the Truly Devious series. I remember reading the first two books but somehow haven’t continued with the rest of the series yet either! One day 🙂 hehe

I have come around and just bought Drunk and Saved A Demon on Kindle last night! It was 2.99, so I had to. Glad to see it on this list. Ohh, Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is such an amazing read!!

I like that you can differentiate between the halves of your list by colors of the cover haha
I love Before the coffee gets cold! Sorry I missed that on my list this week haha
All look like such fun reads!

OH. I didn’t even realise that about the covers but I’ve just took a look and you’re so right! That’s so funny 🤭 The atmospheric book covers are really screaming they’re moody reads, haha. I adored Before the Coffee Gets Cold. I can’t wait to read the other books in that series 🙂

Love the two books, i prefer cozy but both are great, depends of the mood

I am curious about Before the Coffee Gets Cold since I have been vibing so well with all this Japanese lit.

Oh, why am I surprised that you haven’t read it yet? Maybe because I see that you’ve read so many Japanese translations lately and I just assumed that you’d read it. 🤭 It’s one of the few that I’ve read but have many more on my TBR!

These are great picks! I usually think of cozy books when I think about stormy days, but you’re right. Sometimes a good atmospheric book is better!

As a mood reader, it definitely depends on what my mood is brewing up that day. 🤭 I think it could also depend on the severity of the storm and how long it lasts lol

That’s true, the kind of storm makes a difference too! And also whether I have to go out in it later… I’m a lot less likely to read anything creepy if I know I need to drive home in the storm, for example!

Oh yeah, if it’s a violent storm I definitely don’t want to be reading anything creepy. I’m already enough of a scaredy cat—my mind would be playing mad tricks on me if I did! 🫣 I’d be imagining all sorts of the worst things in a scary storm!

Yay for fellow mood readers who need to have both an atmospheric and a cozy option ready, because who knows what the mood will be 😀
I loved and completely agree about The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea.

Oh yeah, mood readers know what’s up! 🤣 Never know what mood will strike and when it’ll strike. We gotta be ready for anything, haha!

I agree that cozy mysteries are a good choice for a stormy day!
Please drop me a comment. I am trying to figure out if others can get through whatever barriers my provider has placed in our way. And I need the data. Thank you. My books which include snowy scenes

Cozy is too low stakes for me. From your list, I only read Truly Devious but never picked up the sequels.

During a storm, I look for light, cozy reads. The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea and Before the Coffee Gets Cold are two that I would definitely grab during a cold snowy winter night, or stormy summer. In fact, I believe both of these might be on my TBR shelf, but will need to check. Great list, Dini.

I’m happy that I can add them to your TBR and I hope that if/when you read them you’ll enjoy then as much as I did, Carla 😍

Uh, I’ve added Before the Coffee Gets Cold to my 25 in 2025 list, and you’re right, it definetely looks very cozy! I read my first 2 books by Axie Oh this year and I plan on reading her other titles, so The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is also in my radar!

Yay! That book made me cry buckets (although admittedly I cry easily with books and one of the storylines also hit very close to home, lol) but I hope you enjoy it! I still need to read Axie Oh’s contemporary books but The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is one of my favourites 💜 I hope you love it too!

I can only remember ever crying with 1 book, which also hit a bit close to home. I get emotional a lot, but that one made me stop reading in order to recover myself. Now I am wondering about how I’ll feel about it. For a book to make one cry so much, it must be so touching.

I’m ngl, I’m quite an emotional reader and it honestly doesn’t take much for me to cry while reading 🤣 So I don’t know how easily it could or would make others cry cos I don’t think I’m a very good basis for comparison. I can literally tear up in a mildly emotional scene but I also find it really cathartic so I enjoy it hehe

That’s really good, means you get into the story easily. I’m curious about how I’ll react now.

I completely agree! It was a powerful book and definitely struck a chord with me. It took me over three years to read another book by June Hur and I regretted that it was so long 🙃

Ooh, I still haven’t picked up anything else by June Hur and not because I don’t want to, I’ve just never got around to it (also the books are so expensive, haha). Hopefully I’ll get my hands on one of her new books sometime in the near future 🙂

I tend to like gentler reads when something scary is going on. But sometimes it is nice to read about other terrible storms of the past.
