#TopTenTuesday: Debut Novels I Enjoyed!

We’re back with another Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is Debut Novels I Enjoyed (A debut novel is an author’s first published book. You could also choose to share genre or age group debuts if you’d prefer, such as an adult fiction author’s first YA book or a mystery writer’s first romance.) (submitted by Angela @ Reading Frenzy)

I was really excited when I saw this post because I thought I had myself covered with my ‘debuts’ shelf on Goodreads. It turns out, I have no such shelf! 🤪 I know I’ve read and enjoyed plenty of debuts but I was drawing a straight blank while making this post (as it usually happens, lol). Thankfully, Goodreads had various debut lists to help me out and as a result, you can see how varied my reading tastes are although most of these are still fantasy and romance with dabs of lit fic!

Open Water
Interview with the Vampire

The Song of Achilles

The Poppy War

The Name of the Wind

More Happy Than Not
Legends & Lattes

The Flatshare

Malice
Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore

Have you read any of these debuts and did you enjoy them too? What’s one of your favourite debuts?

  1. okay, so many of these are ones I love too!! I actually read Circe first before the TSOA so I mistakenly thought that was her debut for a while lol 😂
Also love Name of the Wind, Interview with a Vampire & L&L! I definitely want to read Malice too.

  2. I also loved The Flatshare. You have a few books I’d like to try – I’ve heard good things about John Gwynne. I want to read In The Name of the Wind but I refuse to until dude publishes the last book. I’m not getting into another A Song of Ice and Fire situation, lol. I also really loved Song of Achilles and The Poppy War is on my TBR. I’ve read Babel and Yellowface from R.F. Huang but haven’t read this trilogy yet.

    • I still need to read more by Gwynne but I was surprised by how much I loved Malice when I read it. Yeah, I haven’t read the second book in Rothfuss’ series yet because I don’t know if we’ll ever get the final book (so sad)! I hope you enjoy TPW whenever you get around to reading it. It’s a *very* intense and dark fantasy read but incredibly written.

  3. Anne Rice was the very first I thought of when I saw this week’s theme – it makes me super happy to see it on your list because I have so much love for that book, and series

    • It’s still the only book by Anne Rice that I’ve read. Years ago, I did start reading the second book in this series but then I forgot my copy on the plane and I was so irritated with myself 😂 I havet bought a new copy since but one day, I will!

    • I don’t think it’s weird! MHTN is such an intensely emotional read. I do find all of his books emotional but none hit me as hard as this one. Many have mixed feelings about his books, so you’re not alone in your thoughts/feelings!

  4. I’ve never paid attention to debuts before so I almost never can tell which books are the author’s debut, so it’s always mindblowing to me every time someone mentioned that TSOA and TPW are debuts! The storytelling is just so good with those books, they are amazing!

    • I also pay very little attention to those types of book details so I’m glad that I had Goodreads lists to fall back on to let me know, lol. I also can’t believe TSOA and TPW are debuts—stunning writing but no surprise with these authors! 😍
