š SYNOPSIS
True love is at stake in this charming, debut romantic comedy.
Cassie Greenberg loves being an artist, but itās a tough way to make a living. On the brink of eviction, sheās desperate when she finds a too-good-to-be-true apartment in a beautiful Chicago neighborhood. Cassie knows there has to be a catchāonly someone with a secret to hide would rent out a room for that price.
Of course, her new roommate Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is far from normal. He sleeps all day, is out at night on business, and talks like he walked out of a regency romance novel. He also leaves Cassie heart-melting notes around the apartment, cares about her art, and asks about her day. And he doesnāt look half bad shirtless, on the rare occasions theyāre both home and awake. But when Cassie finds bags of blood in the fridge that definitely werenāt there earlier, Frederick has to come clean…
Cassieās sexy new roommate is a vampire. And he has a proposition for her.

TL;DR: My Roommate is a Vampire was a funny and entertaining romance. This was a romcom that had plenty of romance and comedy with an additional paranormal twist in its modern-day setting! Cassie and Frederick were an endearingly awkward and cute vampire and human duo who were simply trying to figure out how to share the same space without giving in to the burning attraction they felt for each other knowing what a bad idea it would be to give in. Ultimately, this was a story that didn’t seem to take itself too seriously and I think if you’re looking for a laugh-out-loud read with cute feel-good moments, plus a couple of steamy ones too, then I would recommend this!
This wasn’t entirely what I thought it’d be at the start. We do have the vampire roommate but it was goofier than I expected and I don’t mean that in a bad way! I found myself chuckling out loud a few times while reading because Cassie could be pretty funny in a self-deprecating, deadpan way and I enjoyed the cutesie get-to-know-you letters and banter between her and Frederick.
Cassie was a pretty down-to-earth and relatable FMC. Her life is a bit of a shambles when we meet her which seemed standard fare for how things tend to go for her. She doesn’t think very highly of herself and neither does she believe it when others say good things about her (until Frederick comes along, that is) but to her credit, she never gives up on her dream to make art for a living. She’s passionate about her work and despite not getting the reception she expects for it, her determination and drive mean she never quits no matter how hopeless she feels about a situation. It was admirable! I have to admit that her negative glass-half-empty attitude kind of got trying as the story went on and I found it difficult to picture her as the “ray of sunshine and positivity” that Frederick describes her as, but other than that, it wasn’t a hardship to follow her POV.
I loved Frederick’s old-timey ways that made him unintentionally adorable and funny. It was entertaining to see him try and navigate the modern world and I especially loved when he discovered Buffy (and got jealous over a certain human librarian) and K-Dramas that inspired his fashion! Of course, many of the issues he found about modern societyāthe virality of TikTok, the toxicity of the internet, and the ridiculousness of many of the things we take too seriously or don’t take seriously enoughāwere pretty spot on and I had a good time reading about the irony of our modern world through his lens. I thought the notes they exchanged throughout the story were super cute and it helped us get to know both of them better!
Freddy’s friendship with Reggie was great too and I loved their frenemy banter. I honestly wouldn’t mind getting a book for Reggie and I would absolutely read it!
Why I’m not giving this a higher rating: There were a few things that were not for me or that I found frustrating and took away from my initial enjoyment and immersion into the story. This was pretty much instalove and the frequency with which Cassie repeated how big, tall, broad-chested and good-looking Frederick was admittedly got tiring to read about pretty quickly. I know a lot of romance does that and usually I don’t mind but this was soĀ in your faceĀ about it so often. And while I enjoyed my read of this, I also didn’t feel particularly connected to any of the characters. I liked Cassie and Frederick but there was just something missing for me. There was also one element of the story, in particular, that was confusing because it didn’t add to anything. Not even a third-act breakup and happy news for those third-act haters, there isn’t one in this book! š I know the resolution of this part of the story was meant to probably be silly (and it was), it was the unexpectedness and outlandishness of it that made me laugh out loud.
Ultimately though this was a good time and I sped through it so quickly because it was so easy and enjoyable to read. I hope Reggie gets his own story in the future! š

Have you read My Roommate is a Vampire or is it on your TBR?

Great review, Dini. The more I see about this book the more I’m glad Berkley rejected my request on NG (still salty, though, because Berkley). It sounds like something I’d enjoy more as a random mood read rather than as an ARC obligation. Glad it kept you entertained!

I rated this a bit higher (4/5) because it really did amuse me. I thought it could have done without the nefarious part of the plot. It really brought nothing to the story and seemed a bit underdeveloped and quickly resolved. But if we got a book for Reggie, I would read it too

The nefarious part of the plot just made the story seem all the more silly because it was a little ridiculous. I wonder where the author intended to go with that bit of the plot š I’m glad you really enjoyed it and that it really amused you! I would 10/10 read a book about Reggie if the author writes one though. I would love to know his back story!

I actually hadn’t seen too many reviews for it but I was very surprised by how different it was to what I expected. š In good and bad ways. But it was still fun and I hope you enjoy it if you do pick it up!
