Mini Series Review: Hidden Legacy by Ilona Andrews

If you’ve been on the blog lately you’ve seen that I developed a mild obsession with the Hidden Legacy Series by Ilona Andrews. I’ve finished the first three Nevada Baylor books in the series over the last two days and I’m already itching to read more! 😂 I do get wordy in these mini-reviews so… TL;DR: This series is amazing. With awesome world-building, a fascinating House magic system, and characters who are so easy to root for and who end up feeling like family, this is a series I would recommend to those who love their paranormal urban fantasies coupled with (a bit of) steamy romance!

📖 SYNOPSIS

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

⚠️ CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNINGS

Combat violence, gun violence, blood, gore, PTSD, death of a family member to cancer (recounted), torture, kidnappingˀ

Soon after I started reading this, I could feel a mild obsession ignite. This was action-packed and read like a whirlwind with slightly confusing but awesome world-building and many characters to remember. Having read several of IA’s books, I know that as the series goes on, their world-building gets clearer, but I found the Houses and the magical powers in this alternate reality fascinating! I also loved all the characters introduced.

Nevada is a baddie MC who was easy to root for. She had an amazing relationship with her family and I thought the whole Baylor family was amazing. Then there’s MAD ROGAN. Listen… He’s got this mysterious, competent and deadly aura and he oozes raw masculine sensuality. It was HOT and I get why Nevada was so distracted by and caught up in him. 🥵 The mystery plot kept me on my toes and I appreciate how IA introduces old and sometimes obscure mythology in their stories. The ending sets things up nicely for book two!

📖 SYNOPSIS

Nevada Baylor has a unique and secret skill—she knows when people are lying—and she’s used that magic (along with plain, hard work) to keep her colorful and close-knit family’s detective agency afloat. But her new case pits her against the shadowy forces that almost destroyed the city of Houston once before, bringing Nevada back into contact with Connor “Mad” Rogan.

Rogan is a billionaire Prime—the highest rank of magic user—and as unreadable as ever, despite Nevada’s “talent.” But there’s no hiding the sparks between them. Now that the stakes are even higher, both professionally and personally, and their foes are unimaginably powerful, Rogan and Nevada will find that nothing burns like ice…

⚠️ CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNINGS

Combat violence, gun violence, blood, gore, grief & loss depiction, death of a mother, death of a father from cancer (recounted), murder, war themes, explicit on-page sex scenes

I can’t read these books fast enough—I want to devour them like popcorn candy! The second book in the series continues to be action-packed and filled with incredible magic, terrifying monsters, a compelling mystery and awesome characters who are easy to root for. We’re introduced to even more Houses and fascinating mage abilities. I especially loved Cornelius’ ability and low-key it was one that I wanted to have growing up, lol. The plot gets even more complex as the stakes get even higher when the Baylor family finds themselves the target of several ruthless magical attacks. I loved seeing Nevada become more comfortable with her abilities and grow stronger too. The Baylor’s also continue to be an amazing family and I love how they took in new characters into their fold. We learn a lot more about Rogan in this book and his dark history—it was horrifying and heartbreaking to read what he went through and it made it so much easier to understand his character!

Also, the romance heats up between Nevada and Rogan and phew, their chemistry is just off the charts and their sexual tension was enough to set my Kindle aflame! You know it’ll burn (and burn good) when a tactile such as Rogan is involved and the authors don’t disappoint on this front either. 🥵 Holy forking shirtballs, let’s just say their push and pull combined with the mounting tension makes their capitulation all the more worth the wait.

BRING ON THE NEXT BOOK, PLEASE!

📖 SYNOPSIS

Nevada Baylor can’t decide which is more frustrating—harnessing her truthseeker abilities or dealing with Connor “Mad” Rogan and their evolving relationship. Yes, the billionaire Prime is helping her navigate the complex magical world in which she’s become a crucial player—and sometimes a pawn—but she also has to deal with his ex-fiancée, whose husband has disappeared, and whose damsel-in-distress act is wearing very, very thin.

Rogan faces his own challenges, too, as Nevada’s magical rank has made her a desirable match for other Primes. Controlling his immense powers is child’s play next to controlling his conflicting emotions. And now he and Nevada are confronted by a new threat within her own family. Can they face this together? Or is their world about to go up in smoke?

⚠️ CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNINGS

Combat violence, gun violence, blood, gore, miscarriage recounted, death of a father from Early Onset Alzheimer’s (recounted), murder & attempted murder, kidnapping, war, forced institutionalization (recounted)a, explicit on-page sex scenes

This was an awesome conclusion to the Nevada Baylor part of the series! Everything from the New Rome conspiracy to the new family threat introduced in the previous book to the intense romance between Nevada and Rogan was wrapped up well. But the authors left room for the world and characters to expand even further and I’m glad there are more books to get to in this series.

Without a doubt, my favourite aspect of the series so far is the characters. Don’t get me wrong, the world-building and magic system is expansive and incredible but I love when characters feel so real that you wish you could be besties with them. I loved this family + found family so much! Without getting into spoiler territory, I will say that the conspiracy runs pretty deep and I suspected everyone. It kept me on my toes and completely hooked from beginning to end!

The romance was also INTENSE AND HOT AND WOW. Talk about SWOON and the steam was STEAMING and gah, I loved Nevada and Rogan so much! 😍 Things aren’t 100% perfect for them and they have their issues to work through, especially as Primes and the expectations that come with that title, but I can’t think of a couple who are more perfect for each other. They’re just TOO GOOD together and I love the way they lift each other up and ground each other too. Perfection!

Overall, I loved this series so much. I think I also love it more because these Nevada books didn’t go on for too long and everything came together at the right pace. I would recommend it!

    • I love that the first three books wraps things up nicely for this “first” couple and then the other books are from the perspective of one of the other sisters. It gives a good taste about what Ilona Andrews’ writing is like 😍
