Bookish Naughty or Nice Tag – 2022 Edition!

I’ve been seeing this tag floating around again over the last couple of days and since the (first and) last time I did it was in 2019, I decided why not do it again? It’s not like I have a bunch of other Christmas tags to choose from! *awkwardly clears throat* 🫣 On that note, let’s get straight to it, shall we? My answers apply only to my reading experience in 2022!

This tag was originally created by Jenniely.

The Rules

  • Tag and link the person who tagged you (nobody did, lol)
  • Link back to the creator (Jenniely)
  • Tick or cross off the ones you’ve done!
  • Tag 10 people (if you want)

Received an ARC and not reviewed it ✘

She’s naughty.

So… I’ve not gotten any better at this over the years! I still have long overdue ARCs that I haven’t read yet and that guilt has plagued me. I’ve pretty much almost entirely stopped requesting ARCs unless it’s for books that I, by some miraculous chance, actually have access to on NG or it’s a romance (which is usually easier for me to read quickly)!

Have a less than 60% rating on NetGalley

She’s nice!

Since I’ve got on NetGalley I’ve somehow managed to maintain a 70-72% average rating. I’m still valiantly trying to reach that ever-elusive 80% rating but alas, I just haven’t been able to yet… 😮‍💨 We’ll get there…!

Rated a book on Goodreads and promised a full review was to come on your blog (and never did) ✘

She’s naughty.

HALP, I feel attacked. 😂 For some reason this only happens with books I loved so much that I had no words to describe it. It doesn’t happen with every book that left me speechless—don’t ask me how that works cos I have no idea. It just happens, okay!

Folded down the page of a book

She’s nice!

I admit that I’ve done this in my younger wilder days but it hasn’t happened in a very long time.

Accidentally spilled on a book

She’s nice!

I’m so happy to say that books were safe in my hands this year.

✘ DNF a book this year

She’s naughty.

I honestly can’t believe it. I’ve been trying to DNF a bit more every year, especially when it’s a book I really don’t vibe with! This year, I’ve DNF’d more than one.

Bought a book purely because it was pretty with no intention of reading it

She’s nice!

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever bought any book without any intention of reading it. Sometimes I don’t get around to reading it for… Years (or ever) but I always buy with the intention of reading it, haha!

✘ Read whilst you were meant to be doing something else (like homework)

She’s naughty.

Okay, but sometimes it do be like that? Although I’m guilty as charged (with work), it honestly hasn’t happened since I started my new job so at least that’s something, right?

✘ Skim read a book

She’s naughty.

Ah, yep, that definitely happened this year. There were a few books at the start of the year. that probably should’ve DNF’d and didn’t but best believe I skimmed the heck out of it!

Completely missed your Goodreads goal

She’s nice!

Not only did I manage to hit my goal but this year I’ve read more than I ever have before. My goal was to read 150 books but so far I’ve read 206 and I’m hoping to make it a flat 210 by the time NYE rolls around!

Borrowed a book and not returned it to the library

She’s nice!

Sadly, I don’t have access to a library BUT I couldn’t even fathom doing this even when I did have access to a library back in the day. My guilt would haunt me for the rest of my days, lol!

Broke a book buying ban

She’s nice!

I’ve really slowed down on the book buying this year, especially with the physical copies. I’ve mostly indulged in special editions if I did buy books but there was no book-buying ban for me in 2022!

✘ Started a review, left it for ages, then forgot what the book was about

She’s naughty.

Well, shoot. This reminds me that I have unfinished ARC review drafts in my notes app that need completing! I remember my general feel toward the book but I can’t recall the finer details for why those feelings are what they are… 🫣

✘ Wrote in a book you were reading

She’s naughty?

I mean… Does it really count as naughty if I intentionally do it? I wrote (in pencil) in a mass market PB that I knew I could easily get my hands on for “cheap” if I decided I wanted a new copy. No regrets!

✘ Finished a book and not added it to your Goodreads

She’s naughty.

Oops! I’ve done this intentionally for books that I decided not to count towards my goal but others I simply forgot to add or decided not to add because I was too lazy to write a review for them (and they were just “eh” reads, lol)!

Borrowed a book and not returned it to a friend

She’s nice!

I would never do this! I’d be so irked if someone else did it to me so I’d never do it to anyone else, friend or not!

Dodged someone asking if they can borrow a book

She’s nice!

This is an easy win since I know so few people IRL who read. I recently discovered a colleague loves to read as much as I do and our tastes sometimes overlap, so I even offered to let her borrow a book if she wants since it’s such a rare occurrence, LOL!

Broke the spine of someone else’s book

She’s nice!

Since I haven’t borrowed anyone’s book in 2022, this is another easy win! But also, I would do my best to ensure this doesn’t happen if I borrow someone’s copy, even though it’s damn near impossible to not crack a spine?!

Took the jacket off a book to protect it and ended up making it more damaged

She’s nice!

This has thankfully not happened to me this year! I’ve taken them off but both the book and jacket have remained undamaged—phew!

✘ Sat on a book accidentally

She’s naughty.

I don’t know if this will ever not happen to me. The books are everywhere in my room and I frequently accidentally sit on one every now and again! Luckily, they never get damaged, lol.

THE FINAL SCORE: 9 NAUGHTY / 11 NICE!

Alright, alright, that’s what I’m talking about! It’s great to know that I’ve been bookishly nice this year! 😉

I’m tagging…

No pressure to do this if you don’t feel up to it!

That’s it for the 2022 edition of the Bookish Naughty or Nice tag, friends! Were you naughty or nice this year?

  1. ahh this is such a fun tag!! i feel so called out by the “started a review, left it and forgot what the book was about” question lmao. i do that a lot when i truly have no idea what to say, especially when reviewing a book i loved. lovely post!!

  2. You know, I stopped putting “full review to follow” after my short post-read blurb because I have forgotten to go back. This way there are no lies. I have many ARCs that I have accepted will never be read, but my NG ratio is 95%.

  3. Ooooohh, this looks so fun!! I am in the middle of an arc.. well only 34% and I’m struggling.. I’ve put it off for a YEAR. I keep trying.. lol. I’m going to give it a good go tonight and if not.. I’ll have to DNF and it sucks because I hate doing that with arcs!

    • Ooh, tea! What are you reading? Girl, I have so many ARCs that I started and have been struggling to finish. It’s overdue as well but ugh, I don’t know what it is. I hope I don’t go into a reading slump right now but I’m definitely feeling the slumpy vibes… 🫣

      • I’m reading Senlin Ascends. Well, I read it… I thought it was okay but it took tooooo long for it to get anywhere. I probably wont continue the series because I don’t think the writing style was for me. I think the weather and this time of the year always makes me slumpy… I hope you get out of it before it gets you!!

  4. Super fun tag! I think I agreed with almost all your choices.

The only way I could seem to get my NG rating up was to finally clear out the old ARCs I couldn’t get to and be consistent on reviewing in a timely manner. I just chose the option ‘I will not be reviewing this book’ and wrote an explanation why. I didn’t have a ton, but my rating is 91% now. I don’t know if it helped or not, but it at least made me feel less pressure when I looked at my shelf. 😂
