Unpopular Opinions Book Tag!

I’m back with another tag today and it’s for the Unpopular Opinions Book Tag! I was actually tagged by the wonderful Aster Marie @Happy Bookish After a couple of months ago and then I recently saw Kaya do the post, which spurred me into finally writing my own. Thanks for the tag and inspiration, friends! 😍 I honestly don’t think I’ll be spilling any tea or juicy deets as I don’t think these takes are really ‘hot’ but I guess we’ll soon find out. 😂 On that note…

This original book tag was created by the booktuber: TheBookArcher.

A popular book/series that you don’t like

Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco

I’ve technically only read one book in this series but I have tried Maniscalco’s SJTR series and I also didn’t really vibe with it. I rated this 3-stars but in reality, I probably should’ve given it 2… 😮‍💨 Safe to say, it wasn’t for me!

A book/series that many people don’t like but you love

Normal People by Sally Rooney

This book has very polarizing opinions but I am one of the (seemingly) few that love it. This hit me in the feels so hard and although these characters were far from perfect and honestly, frustrated me often, their stories just resonated with me.

A love triangle where the main character ended up with a person you didn’t want them to end up with/ An OTP you don’t like

Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

I hate to use another book by an author I already mentioned but I tend to avoid love triangles so it was hard to come up with a decent answer for this. Maybe this leads into spoiler-ish territory for this book but long story short, I hated it. 😂 The characters were horrid, the relationships were frustrating as hell and I was not happy with that ending. At all!

A popular genre that you hardly reach for

HORROR

Seeing as how I’m not shy about advertising how much of a total chicken I am, this should surprise no one. I do step out of my comfort zone occasionally but if I had the choice, I would not read this genre. 😂

A popular or beloved character that you don’t like

Audrey Rose Wadsworth

Okay, so hear me out. I STRUGGLED to come up with an answer because I don’t really hate any beloved/popular character; but after trolling through my lists, I settled on Audrey from Stalking Jack the Ripper even though I know I haven’t read all the books in this series. Also, I didn’t really strongly dislike her or anything and there were elements to her character that I enjoyed BUT she did irritate me a lot as the book went on. She’s meant to be this super smart young woman who’s solving the crimes before the men and yet, she missed so many obvious clues it was ridiculous and not fitting with her character. After that, I decided I didn’t want to continue reading the series—sorry, not actually very sorry though! 😂

An author that you can’t seem to get into

Jennifer L. Armentrout

I’ve read all of JLA’s books in the Blood and Ash series even though I probably shouldn’t have because I struggled to fully enjoy these books! I know, another very unpopular opinion but it is what it is. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Aside from this romantasy series, I’ve also read one of JLA’s contemporary adult romances and sadly, also didn’t vibe with it. Her books just don’t hit me the same way as everyone else!

A popular book trope you’re tired of seeing?

Miscommunication + Love Triangles

Miscommunication is one of my most disliked tropes, especially when it happens in adult genre books because the characters should simply be grown enough to know how to speak to each other. If you haven’t guessed by this point, I loathe love triangles and prefer if they were written out of existence, please and thanks! 😂

A popular book/series that you have no interest in reading

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

I have to admit that, at one point, my curiosity overwhelmed me and I tried a sample of it on Kindle but I quickly learned that it wasn’t gonna be for me. I knew the writing would irritate me and that I’d hate the direction the romance was going (love triangle territory?), so I ditched it and I’m totally fine with having zero interest in reading it.

The saying goes that “the book is always better than the movies,” but what movie or TV show adaptation is better than the book?

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

I was so ready to love this book but sadly, I found it underwhelming and boring. Still, when the show came out I decided to give it a try and I was so pleasantly surprised by how much more I enjoyed it compared to the book. I would definitely recommend checking out the Syfy show

I’m tagging:

Julie // Leslie // Joanna // Yolanda // YOU!

That’s it for this unpopular opinions book tag! I really don’t have very unpopular opinions, do I? 😂 If I haven’t tagged you but you want to do this tag, feel free to link back because I’d love to hear your unpopular opinions! 😃

  1. YES! The Magicians TV was so much better than the book. I was disappointed when I read it after watching the series. I expected some changes, but this one where the changes were smart. I like the Shatter Me books though I was frustrated with the first book in the additional books and have not continued since then. I have mixed feelings about Normal People. I was so mad with the ending and these people, yet I couldn’t stop reading it.

    • OH, I’m kind of glad that I read the book before seeing the show because I don’t think I would’ve got through even a quarter of the book had I seen the show first. There’s so much personality injected in the show that the book fell flat on. I’m glad I’m not the only one to think so! The characters in Normal People also frustrated me but also, they were very relatable in many ways and the whole dynamic of their relationship just felt so gutting. I was also furious with that ending though! 😂

    • Yeah, I read the sample and I was like “uh, what is this? 🙃” I definitely didn’t get the hype but to each their own—glad to know I’m not the only who didn’t enjoy it though cos it does feel like that sometimes with how much everyone seems to love it!

  2. Interesting that you feel you’re in the minority of people who like NORMAL PEOPLE. I feel that I’m in the minority of disliking it!! After I read it I couldn’t seem to find anyone who felt the same way about it as I did haha. But I do agree with you that the miscommunication trope is so irritating.

  3. I guess I should be thankful I haven’t read any of these. lol. The only one on my TBR is The Magicians, and I’m kind of bummed you didn’t like it that much because I’ve been looking forward to it for a while. I haven’t watched the TV show yet. I was waiting until after I read the books, but I might change my mind on that now.

    • I was really bummed that I didn’t enjoy the book but the more I read, the less engaged I felt. I think it started off well though and I mean, I obviously enjoyed it enough to want to check out the series and I’m glad I did! 😂 I hope you enjoy it though, Chris!

  4. I didn’t mind Audrey Rose but the fourth book in that series was just not it. 😂 I kind of gave up on the author because KOTW wasn’t my vibe.

    • Oh, did you also not enjoy KOTW? When I put out my review I felt like I was the only one who didn’t like it and gave it 2-stars when all I kept seeing was 5-stars everywhere! 😂 I’ve heard the SJTR series doesn’t end well at all so I’m kind of glad that I didn’t get invested from the first book, lol.

  5. Yes!! So many similarities here. I cannot read Armentrout anymore!! lol Well that series.. I might try another that I own. haha. I didn’t love Stalking Jack the Ripper and own like 4 of the books? I might give the second book a try but we will see.

    • LESLIE, how did we get through all the FBAA books we did?! LOL, I’m so mad at us but also, I’m so proud of us for getting through such rough reads and getting through them well! 🤣 I’m glad to know it wasn’t just me who didn’t enjoy SJTR as much as everyone else seemed to love it. I’m definitely not invested enough to continue the series but since you have the second book already, I’d give it a try before letting it go if it doesn’t work for you! 😂

  6. YES to this post!!! omg u are NOT missing out on stalking jack the ripper. if you hated audrey in the first book…well, let’s just say that the rest of the books make her behavior in the first 2 books like sherlock holmes himself💀 also i just read kingdom of the wicked and it was so bad!!! I’m so happy you did this tag!!!

    • Hahaha, I’m really glad that I’m not the only who shares in these unpopular opinions especially when a few of these authors and books mentioned are very popular and have huge fandoms! 🙃 Thank you for inspiring me to finally get this post done! Haha

  7. I enjoyed some of JLA’s books, the half-blood books, can’t remember the name of the series, were very entertaining. FBAA was not it for me though, so I’ll probably stay away from her books in the future. I don’t have any interest in continuing that series. LOL

    • What’s even baffling to me is why I continued her FBAA series at all cos I read ALL THE BOOKS, Andie and I hate it. 🙃 Haha, I’m truly a masochist! I think I’m okay with knowing that JLA is not the author for me.

  8. It was a lot of fun seeing your answers to this tag! I’ve been meaning to see The Magicians for the longest period of time: it looks like such a great show! And good to see your response on the horror genre 😅 It’s nice knowing I’m not alone on that.
