Am I friends with JP Cane?
Ha! That’s laughable.

Besides the fact that he’s adopted some far-fetched notion from the movie When Harry Met Sally that says men and women can’t be friends and work together, it’s safe to say we’re not friends. He’s annoyingly loud, obnoxiously handsome, and has made an art out of poking all my hot buttons . . . multiple times a day.

So you can imagine how disgruntled I am when I not only have to fly to San Francisco with him for work, but stay in the same penthouse. Yup, we’re sharing the same air, twenty-four-seven. We’re talking full-fledged working roommates. The man doesn’t know what it means to wear a shirt, thrives off protein bars, and you guessed it, moans loud enough for people to believe he’s Meg Ryan in a restaurant.

Spoiler Alert: I WON’T be having what he’s having.

Tack on his continuous flirting and his polished good looks, and I’m caught staring down the barrel of a seductive temptation that makes it hard for me to sleep at night.
But guess who can control herself? This girl.
Because if there is one thing I know for certain, it’s that JP Cane and I are so not meant to be.

TL;DR: Meghan Quinn does it again! I thought the first book in this series was okay, but I enjoyed this one so much more and, ngl, it’s mostly because of JP! Their relationship goes from major hate to friendship to love and it was full of surprisingly childish (but funny) antics, hilarious and cheesy moments, and delightfully swoony romance. MQ’s romances are always the perfect pick-me-up and I had so much fun reading this!

What made me happy:

  • JP was hands down my favourite part of this book. He’s a helluva hot mess but so endearing, sweet and SWOONY and I loved him so much! 😍 His soft side and desire to help people and animals totally melted my heart. The whole Kazoo and pigeon thing had me laughing so much but it was also so great to see this side of him. He’s such a sweetheart and it was really adorable how he was so passionate and how much he cared. He keeps people at a distance because after losing his father, he struggled to cope with the loss and although it took a while for his vulnerability to really show, it gave him more depth and made me want to protect him at all costs. Long story short: I LOVED JP! 🥹
  • I had mixed feelings about Kelsey initially but she really grew on me. She’s a hopeless romantic who loves love and being wooed but she also has a lot of insecurities with the way she looks and how people perceive her and I found her pretty relatable! I liked that she never stopped trying and never settled for less than what she knew she deserved.
  • Their banter took a bit to grow on me but these two really had me cackling! Was it over the top and a little childish at times? Yeah, it was, but just thinking about their interactions now that I’ve finished the book has me giggling out loud and smiling stupidly! Even while they were “hating” each other and not getting along at all initially, they had undeniable chemistry! Seriously, talk about an explosive build-up because that shit was FIRE! 🥵
  • The “Meant to Be” podcast run by Kelsey featuring lots of MQ’s couples was such a fantastic addition! It made me curious about the couples that I hadn’t read about yet and getting cameos from some of my favourite couples definitely made me smile big seeing that they’re exactly the same as they were in their books. It was so much fun!

What I was on the fence about (IF I HAD TO BE PICKY):

  • As I mentioned, there were several moments when Kelsey really rubbed me the wrong way. She was very quick to judge and it got frustrating because she couldn’t see how hypocritical she was being.
  • JP and Kelsey weren’t the best at communicating and it made me want to give them both a good shake at certain points because so much angst would’ve been avoided had they just been honest with their feelings. (but I mean, isn’t that always the case?)
  • The third act breakup was a little frustrating simply because I didn’t see why it needed to happen. I thought the reaction to it was slightly over the top and I thought the whole situation could’ve been handled better by both of them.

  1. JP was the STAR. I agree. And I also agree about mixed Kelsey feelings. Did she really truly deserve the awesomeness of JP? Still probably can’t say 100%. She was relatable and grew on me as well. I also loved the podcast. I didn’t mind the third act breakup because then I’m not tortured as long. Haha. Great review!

  2. This one sounds so good! Sometimes, the final conflict in romance books isn’t handled very well. Adding this one to my TBR! I have so many MQ’s books to read. I’m a little (very!) behind on her book releases. Great review, Dini! 😀

    • I’m totally the same! MQ has such an extensive catalogue and it’s great because there’s always a newly discovered MQ book to read but sometimes it feels like I’ll never get around to reading all her books 😂 I hope you enjoy this one, Andie!
