Top 5 Saturday: Books with Unique Formats

Welcome back to another Top 5 Saturday! Just in case you don’t know Top 5 Saturday is a weekly meme created by Mandy @ Devouring Books and it’s where we list the top five books (they can be books on your TBR, favourite books, books you loved/hated) based on the week’s topic. You can see the upcoming schedule at the end of my post 🙂 This week’s topic is actually: Book with Unique Format (Diary entries, verse, documents, podcast, blog, etc.)

I can’t believe I had such a hard time coming up with five books for this week’s prompt because I do love a book that’s written in mixed-media format. As it turns out though, I don’t seem to have a lot of them on my TBR although I can think of quite a few that I’ve read and loved, such as the Illuminae Files–which you MUST read if you haven’t yet! In the end, I’ve managed to come up with five books that are a mix of verse and epistolary, and some have been on my TBR for way too long (looking at you, Dracula!) but all of them are high on my priority list for this year!

CLAP WHEN YOU LAND

Book cover: Clap When You Land

Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people…
In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.
Separated by distance—and Papi’s secrets—the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered.
And then, when it seems like they’ve lost everything of their father, they learn of each other.

GMORNING, GNIGHT!: LITTLE PEP TALKS FOR ME & YOU

Book cover: Gmorning, Gnight!: Little Pep Talks For Me & You

Good morning. Do NOT get stuck in the comments section of life today. Make, do, create the things. Let others tussle it out. Vamos!
Before he inspired the world with Hamilton and was catapulted to international fame, Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspiring his Twitter followers with words of encouragement at the beginning and end of each day. He wrote these original sayings, aphorisms, and poetry for himself as much as for others. But as Miranda’s audience grew, these messages took on a life on their own. Now Miranda has gathered the best of his daily greetings into a beautiful collection illustrated by acclaimed artist (and fellow Twitter favorite) Jonny Sun. Full of comfort and motivation, Gmorning, Gnight! is a touchstone for anyone who needs a quick lift

PUNCHING THE AIR

Book cover: Punching the Air

The story that I thought
was my life
didn’t start on the day
I was born
Amal Shahid has always been an artist and a poet. But even in a diverse art school, he’s seen as disruptive and unmotivated by a biased system. Then one fateful night, an altercation in a gentrifying neighborhood escalates into tragedy. “Boys just being boys” turns out to be true only when those boys are white.
The story that I think
will be my life
starts today
Suddenly, at just sixteen years old, Amal’s bright future is upended: he is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and sent to prison. Despair and rage almost sink him until he turns to the refuge of his words, his art. This never should have been his story. But can he change it?

DRACULA

Book cover: Dracula

When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a London house, he makes horrifying discoveries about his client and his castle. Soon afterwards, a number of disturbing incidents unfold in England: an unmanned ship is wrecked at Whitby; strange puncture marks appear on a young woman’s neck; and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the imminent arrival of his ‘Master’. In the ensuing battle of wits between the sinister Count Dracula and a determined group of adversaries, Bram Stoker created a masterpiece of the horror genre, probing deeply into questions of human identity and sanity, and illuminating dark corners of Victorian sexuality and desire.

84, CHARING CROSS ROAD

Book cover: 84, Charing Cross Road

This charming classic, first published in 1970, brings together twenty years of correspondence between Helene Hanff, a freelance writer living in New York City, and a used-book dealer in London. Through the years, though never meeting and separated both geographically and culturally, they share a winsome, sentimental friendship based on their common love for books. Their relationship, captured so acutely in these letters, is one that will grab your heart and not let go.

JANUARY SCHEDULE:

Do you like books written in mixed media formats? What are your favourite kinds? Are any of these on your TBR or do you have any recommendations?

    • I honestly can’t recall all the ones I’ve read but I don’t think there are many… I’ve mostly enjoyed them although I think I prefer the ones that go ‘all the way’ rather than do half-and-half if I’m making any sense 😂

    • I’m quite excited to give it a try! I’ve got the audiobook narrated by Acevedo and I’m so excited to hear her read her work. I listened to the audio for Poet X, which is also in verse, and it was amazing! I hope you do give her a try, Jess! I think you’ll like her books

  1. I absolutely LOVED Clap When You Land! I’m going to have to check out the rest of the books on this list. Have you read The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo? That one’s in verse and was absolutely incredible.

  2. I hadn’t heard of any of these! I found it really hard to find books for this week’s topic just because it’s hard to search for them. A lot of mixed media books I didn’t know were mixed media until I started reading them or I looked through the reviews.

Also, I have Illuminae on my TBR, but didn’t put it on my list just because I feel like I’m always talking about how I need to read it!
