Sundays in Bed With… #MyWeeklyWrapUp

We’re back with another Sundays in Bed With… meme! This meme dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

I’ve done zero reading this Sunday. I finished three sci-fi romances this weekend and now I’m not sure what I’m in the mood to pick up. I think (just maybe) I’m on a bit of a romance kick but I’m also keen for fantasy, so I might pick up a romantasy (romance fantasy). Maybe… Fortuna Sworn? I think I’ll give it a try and see if it’s my jam but if not, I’m also tempted to try A Deal with the Elf King (available on Kindle Unlimited, by the way!).

Fortuna Sworn is the last of her kind.
Her brother disappeared two years ago, leaving her with no family or species to speak of. She hides among humans, spending her days working at a bar and her nights searching for him. The bleak pattern goes on and on… until she catches the eye of a powerful faerie. He makes no attempt to hide that he desires Fortuna. And in exchange for her, he offers something irresistible. So Fortuna reluctantly leaves her safe existence behind to step back into a world of creatures and power. It soon becomes clear that she may not have bargained with her heart, but her very life. TRIGGER WARNING: This novel contains scenes or themes of toxic relationships and slavery.

The elves come for two things: war and wives. In both cases, they come for death.
Three-thousand years ago, humans were hunted by powerful races with wild magic until the treaty was formed. Now, for centuries, the elves have taken a young woman from Luella’s village to be their Human Queen. To be chosen is seen as a mark of death by the townsfolk. A mark nineteen-year-old Luella is grateful to have escaped as a girl. Instead, she’s dedicated her life to studying herbology and becoming the town’s only healer.
That is, until the Elf King unexpectedly arrives… for her. Everything Luella had thought she’d known about her life, and herself, was a lie. Taken to a land filled with wild magic, Luella is forced to be the new queen to a cold yet blisteringly handsome Elf King. Once there, she learns about a dying world that only she can save. The magical land of Midscape pulls on one corner of her heart, her home and people tug on another… but what will truly break her is a passion she never wanted.

What are you currently reading?

Nothing has really happened this week. Monday to Wednesday was busy with work and I ended up working almost to midnight on Wednesday, so I didn’t really have time to think. My depression has been getting increasingly worse over the last few weeks and this week in particular it has felt even more overwhelming. My brain has been wrapped up in a fog that makes it so hard to get out of bed and the only thing I’ve wanted to do is to wrap myself up under the covers and sleep and read, undisturbed. I’m still completely exhausted and I’m not looking forward to work tomorrow. 🙃

My island on ACNH is still unfinished and I’ve become even more uninspired in this state I’m in. I’m just tired. There were some cute moments that really made me happy, like when my three favourites hung out at Resident Services together, and when my first villager ship–Kidd and Chevre–worked out together in matching outfits. SO cute! Also, Dom sitting on the beach looking out at the horizon was a definite mood.

I just wanted to thank everyone who left positive and reassuring comments on my post last week when I mentioned an author had stepped into my reviewer space and made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Your words were really comforting and I really appreciated it especially with where my head is at right now.

In other bookish news, sci-fi romances have really helped me get through this week and I’ve been devouring them since Friday. I’m a big romance reader but I never thought alien romance would be my jam! These authors have convinced me otherwise and I’ll be posting mini-reviews at some point this week! 😊 I’m sorry I haven’t been blog-hopping or responding to comments as quickly this week. It’s been trying but I’m still trying!

TRACK HIGHLIGHT

I’m still on a Patrick Droney kick and I think I might (low key) be obsessed! 🙈 Glitter has quickly become one of my favourite songs and I already know that this track is gonna make it onto my 2021 Top Songs playlist on Spotify 🤣

🎶 String of lights on the door // Welcome back to your life
This is worth living for // There’s so much left in store

I hope you’ve all had a good weekend and that you have a great week ahead! Take care of yourselves and of each other, friends 🖤

  1. Aww, Dini, I’m so very sorry you’re dealing with the depression, and that you have to deal with yuck from an author!! Sending lots and love and hugs your way!! I started Fortuna Sworn right before I started Medieval-A-Thon, so it’s been on hold for a while. I’m looking forward to picking it back up. I haven’t read enough of it yet to know how I’ll feel about it, though. A Deal With the Elf King is on my TBR, too. Hope you love whatever you decide to pick up and that it helps pull you out of the funk!!

    • Thanks, Ali! Yeah, the author thing definitely shook me and it sadly also made me wary about reading from smaller authors who are probably more likely to see the review I write for their books. 🙈 But everyone’s words of support on here were really helpful and assuring! I ended up finishing all three books of Fortuna Sworn this week… It’s a bit of a mixed bag for me. I’m starting to realise how much I dislike angsty young romance 😂 But I’m really keen to see what you think and I hope you enjoy it! Hope you’ve had a good week, Ali!

  2. I’m so sorry to hear that you’re dealing with depression (and that it’s even worse). Do you have anyone to talk to about it (a therapist)? Or have you found that medication helps? I really help things turn around very soon.

Finishing three books in one weekend is amazing! I so wish that I could read that fast!! 🙂

    • Thanks, Tanya. I haven’t been seeing recently but that’s one personal goal for myself this year. I’m glad to say that this week has gotten slightly less brain-foggy and I’m hoping that my headspace continues to improve! ❤️ When I get in these states losing myself in books is one of the only things that help me resist succumbing to wanting to sleep the days away! Lol

  3. Happy reading! I’ve heard good things about Kova’s books. I’m sorry to hear about your depression though- I hope this week is a better one for you. Take care of yourself!

And sci- fi romances are fun, I read Polaris rising recently and loved it!

  4. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a bit of a rubbish week, Dini! I hope you’re feeling much better very soon and that you continue to find things that bring you joy. Sending you lots of love! ❤

I love a bit of romantasy and I feel like I've been seeing Deal with the Elf King everywhere recently, so I think I'll have to check it out. Have you read any of Grace Draven's work? I've read five of her books now and she's a romantasy author I really like–I especially love her Beauty and the Beast retelling, Entreat Me.

    • Thanks Jess! I’m happy to say that things picked up as this week progressed and I’m feeling in a slightly better headspace. ❤️ I hope you’ve had a good week, too!

In the end, I decided to pick up Fortuna Sworn but I’m hoping to read Elf King in February at some point! I read one of Grace Draven’s books years ago but I don’t actually remember it, though I think I rated it 3 stars on Goodreads. I’ve been wanting to re-read them since reading your reviews of them though! 😂 I will definitely check out Entreat Me! Thanks for the rec 🥰

    • I’ve been reading Fortuna Sworn and it’s been A JOURNEY 😂 I’m hoping to get to Elf King at some point next month maybe. I can’t wait to hear what you’ll think of both of these when you get around to them 😉
