Top 5 Saturday: 2021 Releases

Welcome back to another Top 5 Saturday! Just in case you don’t know Top 5 Saturday is a weekly meme created by Mandy @ Devouring Books and it’s where we list the top five books (they can be books on your TBR, favourite books, books you loved/hated) based on the week’s topic. You can see the upcoming schedule at the end of my post 🙂 This week’s topic is actually: 2021 Releases.

Unlike last year when I spent a good amount of time populating my 2020 releases list on Goodreads, I haven’t really done much of that this year so I know that what’s on my radar is fairly limited to mostly romance and some YA fantasy. These are the two genres I read most of anyway but I know I’m still missing out on *a lot* of what’s coming out next year, so I can’t wait to get caught up with that in the coming week as work slows down and I have more “free” time 😉 But I digress… Here are some books that made it onto my radar and that I’m stupid excited for!

The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang

Book cover: The Heart Principle

To most people, Quan Diep is nothing but a surly-looking, underachieving playboy. The problem is he’s not any of those things. And now that he’s the CEO of an up-and-coming retail business, he’s suddenly a “catch,” and the rich girls who never used to pay any attention to him are looking at him in a new way—especially Camilla, the girl who brushed him off many years ago. Anna Sun dislikes Quan Diep almost as much as germy bathroom door handles. Or so she tells herself. She will never admit that she has a secret crush on him, especially because he only has eyes for her charismatic and newly engaged younger sister Camilla. Over the years, Anna has worked hard to overcome her OCD, but she’ll still need to find a way to bury her anxieties and seduce Quan so he doesn’t ruin her sister’s engagement, and with it, a crucial real estate development deal. Slowly, Anna breaks down Quan’s dangerous and careless exterior while peeling off her own tough, protective shell. But when Quan discovers Anna’s true intentions, he’s forced to confront his own hurtful past and learn to forgive, while Anna must face her greatest challenge: truly opening herself up to love.

Listen, I really need this book. I needed it the minute I finished reading Kai’s story and it pains me that we have to wait almost a whole ass year until *August 2021* for this to be out in the world but… Ugh, my gosh, I can’t wait for this story! We want Quan and we just want Quan now, please?!

Under the whispering door by t.j. klune

Book cover: Under the Whispering Door

When a reaper comes to collect Wallace Price from his own funeral, Wallace suspects he really might be dead. Instead of leading him directly to the afterlife, the reaper takes him to a small village. On the outskirts, off the path through the woods, tucked between mountains, is a particular tea shop, run by a man named Hugo. Hugo is the tea shop’s owner to locals and the ferryman to souls who need to cross over. But Wallace isn’t ready to abandon the life he barely lived. With Hugo’s help he finally starts to learn about all the things he missed in life. When the Manager, a curious and powerful being, arrives at the tea shop and gives Wallace one week to cross over, Wallace sets about living a lifetime in seven days. By turns heartwarming and heartbreaking, this absorbing tale of grief and hope is told with TJ Klune’s signature warmth, humor, and extraordinary empathy.

The House in the Cerulean Sea is one of my top 2020 reads so it’s not surprising that I want to read this. Honestly, I want to read all of Klune’s books. The illustration on this cover is giving me life though–I absolutely LOVE IT and need it ASAP.

malibu Rising by Taylor jenkins reid

Book cover: Malibu Rising

Malibu: August 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over–especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva. The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud–because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he’s been inseparable since birth. Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can’t stop thinking about promised she’ll be there. And Kit has a couple secrets of her own–including a guest she invited without consulting anyone. By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come bubbling to the surface.

I’m a simple gal, I see TJR has a new book coming out and I immediately click. TJR is one of my auto-buy authors because everything I’ve read by her has hit me so hard in the feels. I’m so keen for this!

six crimson cranes by elizabeth lim

Book cover: Six Crimson Cranes

Shiori, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. Forbidden magic runs through her veins. Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted, but it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother.
Raikama has dark magic of her own, and she banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes, and warning Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die. Peniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and, on her journey, uncovers a conspiracy to overtake the throne–a conspiracy more twisted and deceitful, more cunning and complex, than even Raikama’s betrayal. Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in the very boy she fought so hard not to marry. And she must embrace the magic she’s been taught all her life to contain–no matter what it costs her.

EXCUSE ME, JUST LOOK AT THIS COVER PLEASE.

the infinity courts by akemi dawn bowman

Book cover: The Infinity Courts

Jessica tells of growing up in 1980s Texas where she was sexually abused by the daughter of a family friend, and of unsuccessfully auditioning for the Mickey Mouse Club at age 13 with Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling before going on to sign a record deal with Columbia and marrying 98 Degrees member Nick Lachey. Along the way, she details the struggles in her life, such as the pressure to support her family as a teenager, divorcing Lachey, enduring what she describes as an emotionally abusive relationship with musician John Mayer, being body-shamed in an overly appearance-centered industry, and going through bouts of heavy drinking. But Simpson ends on a positive note, discussing her billion-dollar apparel line and marriage with professional football star Eric Johnson, with whom she has three children.

I feel a little bit like a broken record but honestly, the minute I saw this cover I knew I had to get my grubby hands on it. I mean, IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL?

  1. Personally I feel like there just aren’t as many great books coming out lately! I don’t know if it’s bcause of the pandemic or what, but I usually have like 20 books per month I’m keeping an eye on and lately it’s like one or two per month that I’m even semi interested in. Now maybe it’s just because I’ve not been looking as hard, but I feel like the pandemic has affected the book industry.

    • I don’t usually pay that much attention to what’s coming out and what’s not… I mean, I know of some books of course but then I usually add them when I see them on other peoples’ lists but I haven’t been doing much browsing lately 😂 I actually feel quite the opposite though! I feel like more amazing books keep coming out (or at least amazing sounding) and I wanna add them all to my TBR (but then never get around to reading them LOL). But this could also be that I’ve been living under a rock prior to the last two years so now that I’m hearing about all these new releases all the time I get stupidly excited 😂 I do agree that the pandemic has definitely affected the book industry in various ways.

  2. I need Under the Whispering Door RIGHT NOW and will probably lay on the floor and wither just out of spite until someone takes pity on me and puts it in my hand, please and thank you. It’s so long to wait for it! T_T TJ Klune definitely became one of my favorite authors after reading his books last year, though!
